Hallbankgate

In the civil parish of Farlam.
In the historic county of Cumberland.
Modern Authority of Cumbria.
1974 county of Cumbria.
Medieval County of Cumberland.

Hallbankgate has been described as a Timber Castle but is rejected as such.

There are cropmark/slight earthwork remains.

Description

(NY 58155951) Tumulus (OE) (Ordnance Survey Map OS 6" 1926).
Very doubtful (Annotated Record Map Corr 6" (K S Hodgson Nov 1947)).
The published feature is cleary a natural hillock. Any barrow would have occupied the summit, but this is now largely quarried away. Published survey (25") revised (F1 RE 14-MAR-72). (PastScape)

This natural hill, suggested as a 'Tumulus' in 1926 appears in Jackson list of reject castle sites.
